Livestock based integrated farming system provides an opportunity of increasing economic yield per unit area per unit time in small and marginal farmers. In this system, waste materials are effectively recycled by linking appropriate components, thus minimizing environmentalpollution. It is a mixed animal crop system where the animal component is often raised on agricultural waste products while the animal is used to cultivate the soil and provide manure to be used as fertilizer and fuel. Integrated crop-livestock system can be a productive, sustainable, and climate-resilient agricultural system compared to specialized and intensive systems. It could be a key for achieving food and nutritional security and environmental sustainability both in the short and long-term.
Natural Farming is a chemical-free farming system based on livestock and locally available resources, aimed at promoting traditional indigenous practices which gives freedom to farmers from externally purchased inputs and is largely based on biomass mulching, round the year green cover, multi-species green manuring, use of desi cow dung-urine formulations (such as Bijamrit, Jivamrit and Ghanjivamrit etc.) for soil fertility management, use of diversified climate resilient crop plan, botanical extracts for plant protection, Farm Yard Manure (FYM/Vermicompost), soil aeration and exclusion of all purchased synthetic chemical inputs directly or indirectly including organic, biological or otherwise. This would result in a reduction in the cost of cultivation, climate resilient cropping system and doubling farmer’s income through assured marketing. NF is an alternative sustainable and environment-friendly agricultural system to tackle indiscriminate use of chemical inputs and over-exploitation of natural resources which lead to decline in soil health and fertility, depleting natural resources and contamination in food, water and environment. NF seeks to promote an alternative system of farming to achieve freedom from externally purchased inputs, reduction of cost of cultivation and thereby increasing the income of farmers & developing a climate resilient cropping system. This would help to popularize integrated agriculture-animal husbandry, eco-system models based on desi cow and local biomass resources.
